The Erosion of Trust
Over the past several decades, public trust in the American justice system has eroded at an alarming rate. A 2021 Gallup poll found that only 25% of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in the courts, down from 64% in the 1970s.
This erosion of trust is due to a number of factors, including:
- The increasing politicization of the courts
- The rise of mass incarceration
- The growing wealth gap
- The lack of diversity in the legal profession
These factors have created a justice system that is seen as unfair, biased, and inaccessible to ordinary Americans.
The Path to Restoration
'Saving Justice' argues that it is possible to restore public trust in the American justice system. The book proposes a number of bold solutions, including:
- Reforming the way judges are selected. Currently, judges are often elected by partisan politicians, which can lead to the selection of biased and unqualified individuals.
- Reducing mass incarceration. The United States incarcerates more people than any other country in the world. This mass incarceration has led to the erosion of civil liberties, the destruction of families, and the creation of a permanent underclass.
- Closing the wealth gap. The wealth gap is a major factor in the erosion of public trust in the justice system. The wealthy have access to better lawyers and can afford to pay for their crimes, while the poor are often left behind.
- Increasing diversity in the legal profession. The legal profession is overwhelmingly white and male. This lack of diversity has led to a lack of understanding of the needs of minority communities and a failure to address the systemic racism that exists in the justice system.
'Saving Justice' is a call to action for all Americans who believe in the importance of a fair and just society. The book offers a roadmap for restoring public trust in the American justice system and rebuilding a system that serves all Americans fairly and equitably.
