Early Years and Family

Bahiyyih Khanum was born on July 7, 1846, in Tehran, Persia (now Iran),into a family of profound religious significance. Her father, Mirza Buzurg Khan, was the brother of Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i Faith. From a young age, Bahiyyih Khanum was exposed to the teachings of the Bab, Baha'u'llah's forerunner, and became an ardent believer.

Her childhood was marked by turmoil and persecution. In 1852, her family was forced to flee their home due to religious persecution. They embarked on a perilous journey that spanned years, facing hardships and imprisonment along the way. Despite these challenges, Bahiyyih Khanum remained steadfast in her faith, becoming a source of strength and resilience for her family.

The Exile to Adrianople

In 1868, the family was exiled to Adrianople (now Edirne, Turkey). There, Bahiyyih Khanum played a vital role in the establishment and administration of the burgeoning Baha'i community. She assisted her father in his work, translating his writings and teaching the faith to new converts.

Bahiyyih Khanum's exceptional talents as an educator and administrator were quickly recognized. She established schools for boys and girls, promoting literacy and spiritual development. Her dedication to the advancement of women's education was particularly noteworthy, as she believed that knowledge and education were essential for the emancipation and progress of women.

Imprisonment and Resilience

In 1873, Bahiyyih Khanum and her family were unjustly imprisoned in the infamous Acre prison in Palestine. The conditions were harsh, and the prisoners were subjected to torture and abuse. Yet, Bahiyyih Khanum's spirit remained unyielding. She used her time in prison to deepen her spiritual connection and inspire her fellow prisoners.

After eight years of imprisonment, Bahiyyih Khanum and her family were finally released. Despite the physical and emotional toll of her ordeal, Bahiyyih Khanum retained her unwavering faith and determination. She continued to work tirelessly for the advancement of the Baha'i community, traveling extensively and spreading the teachings of Baha'u'llah.

Pioneering and International Service

In 1898, Bahiyyih Khanum undertook a historic journey to the West, becoming one of the first Baha'is to travel to Europe and North America. Her purpose was to promote the Baha'i Faith and establish connections with believers worldwide. She spent several months in Paris, London, and New York, sharing her insights and inspiring the hearts of many.

Bahiyyih Khanum's international service extended beyond her journey to the West. She corresponded extensively with Baha'is in various countries, offering guidance and support. Her ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures was a testament to her universal spirit and her genuine desire to unite humanity.

Last Years and Legacy

Bahiyyih Khanum spent her later years in Haifa, Israel, where the Baha'i World Centre is located. She continued to be a source of wisdom and guidance for the Baha'i community, mentoring younger generations and providing valuable insights into the teachings of Baha'u'llah.

Bahiyyih Khanum passed away on January 15, 1932, at the age of 86. Her legacy continues to inspire and guide Baha'is and seekers of truth worldwide. She is remembered as an outstanding heroine of the faith, a beacon of courage, faith, and unwavering devotion.
