After graduating from high school, Sonny moved to Chicago in search of opportunity. He worked a variety of jobs, including as a janitor and a factory worker. In 1962, he founded his own construction company. Sonny's company was successful, and he eventually became one of the most successful African American businessmen in Chicago.
Sonny was not only successful in business, but he was also a generous philanthropist. He donated millions of dollars to charities and organizations that supported education, healthcare, and the arts. Sonny also served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the United Way of Chicago and the Chicago Urban League.
In addition to his business and philanthropic endeavors, Sonny was also an active community leader. He served as a mentor to young people and was a strong advocate for civil rights. Sonny was also a close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and he marched alongside King during the Selma to Montgomery marches.
Sonny Dean passed away in 2018 at the age of 84. He left behind a legacy of hope, resilience, and service. His story is an inspiration to us all, and it reminds us that one person can make a difference.
