He later moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata) to pursue higher education at Sanskrit College.

Social Reform

Vidyasagar emerged as a leading figure in the Bengal Renaissance, a period of social and cultural reform in the 19th century. He was deeply concerned about the plight of women in Indian society and dedicated his life to campaigning for their rights and education. In 1849, Vidyasagar founded the Bethune School, the first girls' school in India. He firmly believed that education was key to empowering women and enabling them to participate fully in society. He also played a pivotal role in the abolition of child marriage and widow remarriage.
