Born in Washington, D.C. in 1964, Stephen Tyrone Colbert spent his formative years in a suburb of Chicago. His love for comedy blossomed during his time at Northwestern University, where he joined the student comedy group, The No Fun Mud Piranhas.

After graduating in 1986, Colbert moved to New York City to pursue his dream of becoming a professional comedian. He performed at small clubs and open mics until he landed a breakthrough role on the sketch comedy show, "The Dana Carvey Show" in 1995.
